In 1942, during WWII, a group of women stepped up to the plate to help fight fires in Citrus Heights, California. These volunteers became known as The Ladies Auxiliary and (later known as, The Ladies in White). They helped with first aid and put out fires until the war ended . After the auxiliary disbanded, Chief Desmond realized they still needed assistance. A second group of all women volunteer fire fighters was put together called The Ladies In White and served from 1951-1986. They served the community taking up to 500 emergency calls per year. Many of the women had full time jobs and still volunteered their time, taking calls at all hours of the night. Sometimes they had no choice but to bring their children to some calls. The Ladies In White did what was needed without thought of the cost. The need for more advanced training and EMT’s entering the work force eliminated the need for LIW and they gladly passed the baton on.
